This challenging journey combines dramatic high-Andean scenery, turquoise glacial lakes, snow-covered mountains, cloud forest, tropical valleys, and the unforgettable experience of reaching Machu Picchu after several days of trekking.
The adventure reaches its highest point at Salkantay Pass, approximately 4,650 meters (15,256 ft) above sea level. From this remarkable mountain crossing, the environment changes dramatically as the route descends from cold alpine terrain toward the warmer and greener cloud forest.
Another major highlight is Humantay Lake, where turquoise glacial waters rest beneath the surrounding mountains and provide one of the most memorable landscapes of the entire journey.
Unlike the regulated Classic Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek does not require the same limited Inca Trail trekking permit. However, Machu Picchu admission remains limited and should be secured in advance, especially when travelers prefer a specific official circuit.

Salkantay Trek 4 Days Itinerary
Cusco – Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake
Early Pickup in Cusco
Your Salkantay Trek 4 Days begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel or coordinated accommodation in Cusco at approximately 4:30–5:00 a.m.
Travel through the Andean countryside for approximately two hours toward Mollepata, where the group stops before continuing deeper into the mountains.
Breakfast in Mollepata
There will be time in Mollepata for breakfast before continuing toward the trekking area.
Breakfast on Day 1 is not included in the standard package and is paid separately.
Drive to Challacancha
After breakfast, continue by tourist transportation for approximately another hour toward Challacancha, the starting point of the hiking portion.
Here you will meet the trekking support team, organize your personal belongings, and prepare for the first section of the route.
Challacancha to Soraypampa
Begin with an approximately three-hour hike through a scenic high-Andean valley toward Soraypampa at approximately 3,900 meters (12,795 ft).
The trail provides increasingly impressive views of the surrounding mountains while gradually introducing you to the high-altitude environment.
Lunch at Soraypampa
Upon reaching Soraypampa, enjoy a freshly prepared lunch and take time to settle into the first trekking accommodation.
Afternoon Hike to Humantay Lake
Later in the afternoon, begin the uphill hike toward Humantay Lake at approximately 4,200 meters (13,780 ft).
The climb is relatively short but demanding because of the altitude. Upon arrival, enjoy time to admire the turquoise glacial water, Humantay Mountain, and the spectacular high-Andean landscape.
Return to Soraypampa
After enjoying the lake and taking photographs, descend along the same trail toward Soraypampa.
Enjoy dinner at camp and rest in preparation for the most challenging trekking day of the itinerary.

Early Breakfast
Begin the most physically demanding day of the trek with an early breakfast at Soraypampa.
After preparing your daypack, start the sustained ascent toward the highest point of the Short Salkantay Trek.
Ascent Toward Salkantay Pass
The trail climbs steadily for approximately three to four hours through increasingly dramatic high-altitude terrain.
As you gain elevation, enjoy views of glaciers, rocky valleys, and the immense Salkantay Mountain rising above the route.
Salkantay Pass – 4,650 m
Reach Salkantay Pass at approximately 4,650 meters (15,256 ft), the highest point of the four-day trek.
Take time to recover, enjoy the panoramic mountain scenery, and photograph the surrounding glaciers and peaks before beginning the long descent.
Descent to Huayracmachay
Descend through rocky mountain terrain toward Huayracmachay, where the group stops for an included lunch.
The landscape begins to change significantly as the route loses elevation.
From the High Andes to the Cloud Forest
After lunch, continue downhill for approximately another three hours.
Cold alpine terrain gradually gives way to greener valleys, waterfalls, denser vegetation, and the warmer environment of the upper cloud forest.
Chaullay Campsite
Arrive in the Chaullay sector at approximately 2,900 meters (9,514 ft) during the late afternoon or early evening.
Enjoy dinner and rest after completing the longest and most demanding hiking stage of the journey.

Chaullay – La Playa – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes
Morning in the Cloud Forest
After breakfast, leave Chaullay and continue through the warmer cloud-forest environment toward La Playa.
Today’s landscapes are completely different from the high mountains of the previous day, with rivers, waterfalls, orchids, fruit trees, coffee plantations, and tropical vegetation surrounding the trail.
Hike Toward La Playa
Continue downhill through the Santa Teresa Valley for approximately four to five hours, passing local farming areas and small communities.
Depending on the season, you may also observe hummingbirds and other native birds associated with the cloud-forest ecosystem.
La Playa – Lunch & Transfer
Reach the La Playa / Playa Sahuayaco sector, where the group will stop for lunch.
After lunch, continue by local or tourist transportation toward Hidroelectrica. This vehicle section allows the four-day itinerary to reach Aguas Calientes within the same afternoon.
Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes
From Hidroelectrica, begin the final walking section of the day along the railway corridor toward Aguas Calientes.
The route is relatively flat and takes approximately 2½ to 3 hours, following the Urubamba River through dense tropical vegetation and steep mountain scenery.
Hotel in Aguas Calientes
Arrive in Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu Pueblo, check into your hotel, and enjoy a well-earned rest after three consecutive trekking days.
Dinner is included according to the standard meal program. Your guide will also review the following morning’s Machu Picchu entrance time and logistics.

Early Morning in Aguas Calientes
Begin the final day with breakfast at your hotel and prepare for your scheduled visit to Machu Picchu.
The standard package allows travelers to use the pedestrian route between Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu. Shuttle bus tickets can be added separately for travelers who prefer to avoid the uphill or downhill walk.
Machu Picchu Guided Experience
Enter Machu Picchu with your professional guide for an approximately 2 to 2½ hour guided visit.
We prioritize Circuit 2 – Route 2-A or 2-B when tickets remain available because these routes provide one of the most complete classic experiences of the archaeological site.
If Circuit 2 is unavailable, the best compatible official alternative will be arranged according to availability for your travel date.
The exact temples, terraces, viewpoints, and archaeological sectors visited depend on the official route printed on your Machu Picchu ticket.
Optional Mountain Routes
Travelers who reserve Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain must hold a separate ticket and follow the entrance time assigned to that route.
These additional entrances should be requested well in advance because availability is limited.
Option 1 – Return via Hidroelectrica
Travelers choosing the budget return descend to Aguas Calientes and begin the approximately 2½ to 3 hour walk back toward Hidroelectrica.
The tourist bus departs Hidroelectrica at approximately 2:30 p.m. for the overland journey back to Cusco.
Important for the Hidroelectrica return:
An early Machu Picchu entrance is essential. The exact schedule must allow enough time to complete the official circuit, return to Aguas Calientes, walk to Hidroelectrica, and arrive before the bus departure.
Option 2 – Return by Tourist Train
Travelers selecting the train option return to Aguas Calientes and board the confirmed tourist train to Ollantaytambo.
Standard railway service is normally Expedition by PeruRail, Voyager by Inca Rail, or a similar tourist category, depending on availability.
Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, tourist transportation completes the final journey back to Cusco.
IMPORTANT
Machu Picchu Circuit 2 is currently sold out through November. At the moment, availability for Circuit 2 remains only for selected dates in December.
If you are planning to visit Machu Picchu before December, we can still arrange the best available alternative route, prioritizing Circuit 3 or Circuit 1, depending on availability for your travel date.
For travelers visiting in December, we strongly recommend booking as early as possible, as Circuit 2 is the most requested route and remaining spaces can sell out quickly.
