Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour by Train Itinerary
Cusco - Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu
Your Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour by Train begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Cusco, usually between 3:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m.
Scenic Train Journey to Aguas Calientes
At the scheduled time, board the train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes). Our usual departure is around 6:40 a.m., although the exact train schedule may vary according to availability at the time of booking.
During the journey, enjoy impressive views as the railway follows the Urubamba River between towering Andean mountains. The scenery gradually transforms from the highland landscapes of the Sacred Valley into the lush vegetation of the cloud forest surrounding Machu Picchu.
The 6:40 a.m. Inca Rail service currently reaches Machu Picchu Pueblo at approximately 8:01 a.m., making this a particularly comfortable option for travelers spending the night in town.
Arrival & Hotel Check-In
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will receive assistance before heading to your hotel.
Your luggage can be left at the accommodation according to the hotel’s check-in policy, giving you the freedom to enjoy the rest of the day without carrying unnecessary belongings.
Your one-night hotel stay in Aguas Calientes is included, with breakfast provided the following morning.
Free Time in Aguas Calientes
The rest of the day is yours to enjoy Machu Picchu Pueblo at your own pace.
You can explore the artisan market, walk through the town, enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the local restaurants, relax in a café, or simply rest before your Machu Picchu visit.
If you wish, you may also visit the Aguas Calientes hot springs at your own expense.
This extra time in town is one of the main advantages of choosing a 2-Day Machu Picchu Tour, allowing you to enjoy the journey without the rushed schedule of a one-day excursion. Other current 2-day itineraries similarly use Day 1 for the train journey, hotel check-in and free time in Aguas Calientes before visiting Machu Picchu the following day.
Accommodation: Hotel in Aguas Calientes
Meals: Not included on Day 1
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco
Begin your day with breakfast at your hotel before preparing for your visit to Machu Picchu.
Your guide and our team will coordinate the departure according to the entrance time assigned to your reservation.
Shuttle Bus to Machu Picchu
At the scheduled time, head to the bus station and board the shuttle bus from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
The journey takes approximately 25–30 minutes, following a winding mountain road through the lush surroundings of the sanctuary.
Guided Tour of Machu Picchu
Upon arrival, enter the legendary Inca citadel and begin your professionally guided visit to Machu Picchu, located approximately 2,430 meters / 7,972 feet above sea level.
Your guided experience generally lasts approximately 2 to 2½ hours, depending on the route assigned to your entrance ticket.
During the tour, your professional local guide will introduce you to the fascinating history, architecture, engineering, traditions, and spiritual significance of Machu Picchu while you explore the areas included within your designated route.
You will also have opportunities along the circuit to take memorable photographs and admire the dramatic mountain landscapes surrounding the archaeological site.
Machu Picchu currently operates through 3 official circuits divided into 10 routes, so the exact sectors visited depend on the entrance ticket confirmed for your reservation.
Return to Aguas Calientes
After completing your Machu Picchu visit, take the shuttle bus back down to Aguas Calientes.
Depending on your return train schedule, you will have free time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, explore the town, purchase souvenirs, or relax before your journey back to Cusco.
If time permits, travelers who did not visit the hot springs on Day 1 may also choose to visit them at their own expense.
Return Train to Ollantaytambo
In the evening, return to the train station and board your scheduled train from Machu Picchu Pueblo to Ollantaytambo.
Our usual return service departs at approximately 7:00 p.m. The current Inca Rail 2026 timetable lists a 7:00 p.m. departure arriving in Ollantaytambo at approximately 8:41 p.m.; schedules remain subject to availability and operational changes.
Relax and enjoy the final views of the Urubamba Valley as you travel back through the Andes.
Return to Cusco
Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, transportation will be waiting to continue the journey back to Cusco.
Arrival is usually around 10:30 p.m. when using the corresponding 7:00 p.m. train connection, although the final arrival time depends on the confirmed train schedule, road conditions, and your designated drop-off point.
After two unforgettable days of scenic train travel, time in Aguas Calientes, and an immersive guided visit to Machu Picchu, your Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour by Train comes to an end.

Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour by Train – Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose a 2-Day Machu Picchu Tour instead of a Full Day Tour?
The Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour by Train offers a more relaxed experience. You travel to Aguas Calientes on Day 1, spend the night near Machu Picchu, and visit the archaeological site on Day 2 without completing the entire Cusco–Machu Picchu–Cusco journey in a single day.
Is hotel accommodation included in the 2-Day Machu Picchu Tour?
Yes. The tour includes one night in a carefully selected hotel in Aguas Calientes, with breakfast on Day 2. The standard price is based on Double, Matrimonial / Couples, or Triple accommodation.
What time is hotel check-in and check-out in Aguas Calientes?
Hotel check-in is approximately 12:00 p.m., and check-out is approximately 9:00 a.m. on Day 2. The exact conditions may vary slightly depending on the hotel assigned to your reservation.
Does staying overnight mean I can visit Machu Picchu earlier?
Staying overnight in Aguas Calientes places you much closer to Machu Picchu for Day 2 and avoids having to travel from Cusco that same morning. However, your exact Machu Picchu entrance time depends on official ticket availability when your reservation is confirmed.
Is the Machu Picchu entrance ticket included?
Yes. Your official Machu Picchu entrance ticket is included. The exact circuit, route, and entrance time are confirmed according to official availability at the time of booking.
Which Machu Picchu circuit is included?
Whenever availability permits, we prioritize Circuit 2 – Route 2-A or Route 2-B, two of the most requested routes for visiting Machu Picchu. Your confirmed circuit will be communicated before your visit.
What happens if Circuit 2 is sold out?
If Circuit 2 is unavailable for your travel date, we will arrange the best available alternative route according to official Machu Picchu ticket availability. Suitable alternatives may be available within Circuit 1 or Circuit 3.
What train service is included in the tour?
The standard package includes either PeruRail Expedition or Inca Rail The Voyager between Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu Pueblo. The exact operator and schedule are assigned according to availability.
Can I upgrade to the PeruRail Vistadome train?
Yes. You can request a PeruRail Vistadome upgrade for the outbound journey from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes for an additional cost. Your return journey will normally remain on a standard Expedition or The Voyager service. Upgrades are subject to availability.
How much luggage can I take to Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu?
We recommend leaving your main suitcase at your accommodation in Cusco and traveling with a small overnight bag and daypack. Inside Machu Picchu, bags larger than 40 × 35 × 20 cm (16 × 14 × 8 in) are not permitted. Train companies also have their own luggage limits.
Do I need to bring my original passport?
Yes. Bring the original passport or identification document used for your reservation. Your personal information must match the details used for your Machu Picchu and travel reservations.
Are meals included in the 2-Day Machu Picchu Tour?
Breakfast on Day 2 is included with your hotel stay. Lunch and dinner on Day 1, lunch on Day 2, drinks, and snacks are not included, allowing you to choose where you would like to eat in Aguas Calientes.
Can I visit the Aguas Calientes hot springs?
Yes. You can visit the hot springs during your free time in Aguas Calientes if your schedule allows. Entrance to the hot springs is not included in the standard tour price.
Can I visit Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain?
Yes, but these are separate Machu Picchu routes requiring specific entrance tickets. They are not included in the standard tour and must be requested well in advance, subject to official availability.
How far in advance should I book the Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour?
We recommend booking several months in advance, particularly if you prefer Circuit 2, specific train schedules, or upgraded hotel and train options. Availability becomes more limited during periods of high demand.
Is the Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour difficult?
The tour is considered easy to moderate for most travelers. There is no long-distance trek, but your Machu Picchu visit includes stone steps, slopes, uneven paths, and walking at altitude.
