Overview - Humantay Lake Full Day Tour

The Humantay Lake Full Day Tour is one of the most impressive high-altitude experiences near Cusco, combining a scenic Andean journey with a rewarding hike to one of Peru’s most beautiful glacial lakes.

Located at approximately 4,200 meters (13,780 ft) above sea level, Humantay Lake is famous for its vivid turquoise waters surrounded by steep mountain slopes and glaciers. Above the lake rises Nevado Humantay, reaching approximately 5,473 meters, while the neighboring Salkantay massif dominates the surrounding Vilcabamba mountain landscape.

The Humantay Lake hike begins at Soraypampa, at approximately 3,900 meters above sea level. From here, the trail climbs through open high-Andean terrain with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains before reaching the lake.

Once at Humantay, travelers have time to rest, take photographs, appreciate the remarkable color of the water, and learn about the cultural and spiritual importance of the surrounding mountains in Andean traditions.

With tourist transportation, breakfast, lunch, professional guiding, first-aid equipment, and emergency oxygen included, the Humantay Lake Peru experience is an excellent choice for travelers looking for nature, hiking, mountain scenery, and a memorable full-day adventure.

Humantay Lake Full Day Tour Itinerary

DAY 01

Humantay Lake

Early Hotel Pickup in Cusco

Your Humantay Lake Full Day Tour begins with pickup from your hotel or a previously coordinated meeting point in Cusco between approximately 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

Once the group is ready, travel through the Andean countryside toward Mollepata. The road journey takes approximately 2 to 2½ hours depending on traffic and road conditions.

Breakfast in Mollepata

Upon reaching Mollepata, stop for an included breakfast before continuing higher into the mountains.

This is an opportunity to eat, hydrate, and prepare for the high-altitude hike ahead.

Journey to Soraypampa

After breakfast, continue by tourist transportation for approximately one hour toward Soraypampa, located at around 3,900 meters above sea level.

Soraypampa is the starting point of the hike and offers impressive views of the surrounding Vilcabamba mountain range.

Hike to Humantay Lake

Begin the uphill trek toward Humantay Lake accompanied by your professional guide.

The ascent normally takes approximately 1½ to 2 hours, depending on individual walking pace, physical condition, weather, and response to the altitude.

Along the route, enjoy open high-Andean landscapes, mountain streams, grasslands, and increasingly dramatic views toward the surrounding snow-covered peaks.

Humantay Lake – 4,200 m

Reach Humantay Lake at approximately 4,200 meters (13,780 ft) above sea level and enjoy the spectacular turquoise water beneath the surrounding mountains.

There will be time to rest, take photographs, appreciate the landscape, and listen to your guide’s explanation about the natural environment and the cultural significance of the mountains within Andean traditions.

Descent to Soraypampa

After completing the visit, begin the descent along the same mountain trail toward Soraypampa.

Although descending is generally easier, the trail can be steep and uneven, so comfortable footwear and careful walking are recommended.

Lunch in Mollepata

Once back at Soraypampa, board the transportation and return to Mollepata for an included lunch.

Take some time to rest after the hike before beginning the final road journey to Cusco.

Return to Cusco

After lunch, travel back toward Cusco.

Arrival is normally expected between approximately 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., although weather, road conditions, traffic, and group pace may affect the exact schedule.

Pickup, hiking, lake visit, lunch, and return times should therefore be considered approximate.
