Detailed Itinerary – INCA TRAIL 4 DAYS TO MACHU PICCHU

Day 1: Cusco – Km 82 – Llactapata – Wayllabamba – Ayapata Camp

Your adventure begins early in the morning with hotel pick-up in Cusco. We travel through the beautiful Sacred Valley toward the small village of Piscacucho (Km 82), the official starting point of the Inca Trail.

After passing the control checkpoint and presenting your passport, we begin our hike following the Urubamba River valley. The first part of the trail is relatively gentle and offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains and farmland.

Along the route we will visit the archaeological site of Llactapata, where your guide will explain the history of this ancient settlement believed to have been used for agricultural and administrative purposes.

Continuing along the valley, the trail gradually ascends through traditional Andean communities and scenic landscapes. You will also meet our trekking team and porters who carry the camping equipment and prepare delicious meals during the trek.

In the afternoon we reach our first campsite at Ayapata or Huayllabamba, where you will enjoy a hot dinner and rest surrounded by the peaceful mountain environment.

Distance: 12–13 km
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

After an early breakfast, we begin the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. The trail climbs steadily through beautiful Andean scenery toward the highest point of the Inca Trail: Dead Woman’s Pass (Warmiwañusca) at 4,215 meters (13,828 ft).

The ascent takes several hours, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks and valleys. Reaching the summit is one of the most memorable moments of the trek and a great opportunity for photos.

After enjoying the views, we descend into the Pacaymayo Valley where we stop for lunch and rest.

In the afternoon we continue hiking toward the second mountain pass near Runkurakay, passing ancient ruins and beautiful landscapes before reaching our campsite at Chaquiqocha, located in a stunning high-mountain setting.

Distance: 11–12 km
Hiking time: 7–8 hours
Difficulty: Challenging

Day 3 is often considered the most beautiful day of the trek. After breakfast we hike through lush cloud forest landscapes filled with orchids, hummingbirds, and incredible mountain views.

The trail leads us to the impressive archaeological site of Phuyupatamarca, also known as the “City Above the Clouds.” From here you can enjoy panoramic views of the Urubamba Valley and surrounding mountains.

We then descend a long series of original Inca stone steps through tropical vegetation until reaching the archaeological site of Intipata, famous for its beautiful agricultural terraces.

Later we arrive at the spectacular site of Wiñay Wayna, one of the most important and impressive ruins on the entire Inca Trail. This site features terraces, temples, and water channels built dramatically into the mountainside.

Here we enjoy our final campsite on the trail and celebrate the successful completion of the trek with our trekking team.

Distance: 15–16 km
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

On the final day we wake up very early to begin the last part of the trek. After breakfast we hike toward Inti Punku, the original entrance to Machu Picchu used by the Incas.

As the sun rises over the mountains, you will see your first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu from above — one of the most magical moments of the entire journey.

From the Sun Gate we descend to the citadel where your guide will lead a detailed tour exploring the most important areas of Machu Picchu, including temples, terraces, and ceremonial plazas.

After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore or take optional hikes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain if permits were reserved in advance.

Finally, we take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, where you will board the train back to Cusco. You will arrive aprox. at 10:00 pm.
